If you store credit card numbers, electronic bank statements, account numbers, and other personal information<\/a> on your computer, you are at risk. The risk is even higher if you have a broadband or DSL connection available 24\/7.<\/p>\n Spyware are programs that normally enter your computer<\/a> through your browser. These programs can compromise your personal data. Also, there are millions of hackers looking for ways to get into your computer.<\/p>\n The Internet is not the only way that your personal data<\/a> can be compromised. Your computer can be stolen or compromised inside your home.<\/p>\n What can you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n (1) Make sure you have updated antivirus<\/a> software installed. If you’re running Windows 2000 or XP, both Avast and Antivir are great programs that have free versions. Google the names to find their websites<\/a>. Both programs offer automatic updates.<\/p>\n (2) Enable the Windows firewall and make sure you have the latest Windows<\/a> security patches and service packs installed.<\/p>\n (3) Use antispyware software. SuperAntiSpyware, AdAware<\/a>, Spyware Blaster, and Spyware Terminator are all free programs that do a good job. Run them regularly and get frequent updates<\/a>.<\/p>\n Spyware is so prevalent that it is a good idea to use more than one of these programs. Also, install McAffee SiteAdvisor. It is also free.<\/p>\n This program works with Yahoo<\/a> and Google and lets you know if you are going to a safe or unsafe site. Half the battle won’t go to unsafe places.<\/p>\n (4) Turn off your computer or turn off your cable modem when you are not online. Most cable modems have an on \/ off button.<\/p>\n Log out of your computer when you are not using it. This will keep you safe at home<\/a>, although it won’t keep you safe from internet intruders.<\/p>\n
