What is Freeware Software?
The term freeware normally means that a software product can be downloaded and used at no cost, for an unlimited period of time. Using a software at home for activities that do not generate income is considered as personal use, while using it in a company or other similar places is classified as commercial use. Sometimes software vendors make an application freeware for personal use while at the same time require a fee to be paid for commercial use. Though there are many software that is freeware for both personal and commercial use.

When a software is used in school/college it is considered as educational use. Some software vendor considered as personal use while some offer discounted prices or simply consider it as commercial use.

What is Ad-supported Software?
Ad-supported software is the one that is free to use, but it also contains third-party components or services that may or may not be related to the program's functionality, but it helps to generate income for the developer, as compensation for providing the software free of charge. Most ad-supported software products notify the user about these components during the installation process and can choose to skip that product if they want.

What is Free Software?
When a software is distributed under any one version of the GNU GPL license falls within a somewhat similar category and is referred to as free software. Here the free means freedom to use, share, study and modify a piece of software. For this reason, the source code for that software is made freely available, which also applies to modified and shared (distributed) versions. Terms of GPL software states that entities that modify or distribute original or derivate software may charge any amount of money for this service.

However, this never happens. Free software can be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. At the same time, if a person or company creates a derived software product by modifying the original source code and wants to distribute the result, it must be done under the same license, along with the source code modifications.

What is Donationware?
Donationware is a variation of the freeware licensing model where a software can be downloaded and used at no cost, but the developers accept donations, either for themselves or for a non-profit organization of their choice.

What is Trial Software?
All software products that is classified as a trial has a time limit on its usage. Therefore, can be used only for a limited amount of time mostly referred to as evaluation period or trial period. When this period ends the software stops working, and the user is asked to purchase a license in order to continue to use the software. Normally, the trial period is between 15 and 90 days depending on the complexity of the software. For example, operating systems or server software, which can have trial period 180 or more.

What is a Demo Software?
Demo software is similar to that of trial software, but their main characteristic is represented by the functionality limitations. In demo's complete features of a software product is disabled until a license is purchased. Sometimes demos do not have trial limitation, but some functions are disabled and this is not a great advantage.

What is Commercialware Software?
Commercialware software can be only obtained by purchasing it. Such software programs cannot be obtained in a trial or demo form, or via another similar method.
